"I wonder what freedom we would lose if everyone who wanted a handgun had to show that they weren't criminal or crazy."

The sensibility of that depends on the details. How do you show you aren't criminal or crazy, what criteria are used to judge it, who does the judging, how much subjective discretion is allowed, is there an appeal process, what is the appeal process, how much time does this whole process take and at what cost, etc.?

"Whose freedom would be impinged if we all knew who owned what guns?"

This is a VERY ignorant proposition. Publishing information about gun owners would put them at much greater risk of home invasion. Giving criminals maps to steal guns is not a very well thought-out idea, Lynn.

"We don't want to take your little bang-bangs away from you"

Oh, I believe that as much as I believe you want to keep criminals from knowing where guns are and stealing them (see above).

"we just want the right to keep them out of our neighborhoods or at least know who's packing what"

That "right" you propose blanketing the entire neighborhood conflicts with your neighbors' rights to possess guns. Therefore, it really isn't reasonable is it?
If you want to know who is packing what, are you proposing optional open-carry of firearms instead of concealed-carry?

Lynn,
Good Morning. Just wanted to drop you a note--I truly enjoyed meeting you at the cooking school with my sister Marian. I have ordered your book and am excited about reading it. Hope your time in Rome was wonderful and filled with lots of love and laughter.

Just wanted to say hi and hope all is well. Please let me know when you will be in Washington DC. I will be here until mid September, I think [dates are bit flexible with this project]. Take care
